Meet the artist: Yang Yifei

Yang Yifei was born in 1980 and grew up in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province in China and - in earlier times – of China itself. He practised calligraphy and painting from an early age, focusing on ‘flower and bird’ paintings in xieyi style and paintings of eminent figures in gongbi style, giving him a strong foundation in both brushwork approaches. Later, he became a pupil of the eminent landscape painters Xu Yisheng (徐义生) and Hu Yunsheng (胡云生). The latter has designated Yang Yifei as the last artist to be admitted to his studio as a pupil – a rare honour.

Yang Yifei is Director of the Shaanxi Xinhua Art Centre and Founder of Hewei Studio and Zhen Shutang Art Centre in Xi’an. He is also a member of the Shaanxi Calligraphers’ Association and the Shaanxi Artists Association.
